If You Dont Returna Phone Call to a Job Should You Apply Again Later

If a recruiter were to telephone call you lot while you were driving, what would you practice? Well, if you lot're anything similar me, you might be tempted to cross four lanes of traffic and pull over as quickly every bit possible then y'all could take the phone call and (hopefully) country the job you've wanted forever.

While yous're probably more than level-headed than this, I'm willing to bet that seeing an unknown phone number go to voicemail during a long job search has fabricated you lose your cool on at to the lowest degree a few occasions.

Information technology'due south totally understandable to feel broken-hearted when this happens, but here are a few smarter alternatives to consider whenever yous happen to miss a recruiter's call.

i. Have a Brusk Break Before Yous Return the Telephone call

Yous might be thinking, "Are y'all crazy? Why wouldn't I retrieve ASAP?" Of course, there's an interview (or a job offer) on the line. And you shouldn't wait too long to return the call.

But think well-nigh the racing thoughts y'all're having near simply missing the call. When I was a recruiter, I was e'er caught off-guard when a candidate chosen me dorsum completely panicked. I never ruled anyone out when this happened, but information technology did make some of the simplest conversations more than complicated than they needed to be—and a few times, I had to repeatedly reassure the candidate that everything was fine.

And so, before you frantically return the call, take a 5-minute breather. Whatever the recruiter wanted to talk nigh won't modify just because you lot didn't choice upwardly on the first attempt, and information technology will also stay the same if you take a beat before dialing back.

2. If Y'all're Playing Phone Tag, Peruse Another Job Openings

Before I get into this, don't panic if you get sent to voicemail. This kind of affair happens all the fourth dimension, and most reasonable recruiters empathize that the occasional game of phone tag will happen. Notwithstanding, one time y'all leave your message, don't permit yourself stare at your telephone, willing it to band.

I know that it might seem rational to stop everything you're doing until yous hear back, and I've done exactly that my off-white share of times during some long job chase. Why risk missing the telephone call once more by getting caught upwards in something else, correct?

Simply here's the thing, until you've been offered a job, you should yet consider yourself a job seeker, with added accent on the word "seeker." While you lot might exist waiting to hear dorsum about your dream position, there are enough of other opportunities you might be missing out on if you sit and wait for a callback.

How do I know? Well, if I had waited around for other companies to call me back, I probably would've missed out on the listing for my position hither at The Muse.

three. And if You Are Sitting by the Phone and Not in the Mood to Chore Search, Exist Productive

It's difficult not to be distracted by silence when y'all're waiting for a recruiter to call you back. And I get it—sometimes the anticipation is so not bad that you only can't find the motivation to keep looking for jobs. You've had a lot of long days and then it's perfectly fine to do something else.

What should you do instead? Maybe there's a book about your craft that you've been ignoring for a while. If that's the case, go ahead and take the fourth dimension to pick it back upwardly again. Or perhaps there's a hobby y'all oasis't had the run a risk to indulge in lately. If that's your reality, this might be difficult to believe, but I'1000 going to let you in on something that really worked for me: Exercise whatever information technology is that you oasis't had the hazard to do lately. You'll be surprised past how productive information technology is to make sure you're taking care of yourself, even though information technology might seem similar there are plenty of things yous should exist doing instead.

Nobody likes waiting to hear dorsum, specially when there'due south a potential job offering on the line. It only gets more painful when you start playing telephone tag with someone who y'all think holds all the answers. But rather than torturing yourself, call up that you lot will eventually connect. And your time tin be much better spent doing anything else besides staring at your phone.
